I owned and operated my Office Cleaning Business for 42 Years.  That is a long time to do anything and by the time you accomplish that you should be pretty experienced.  I really feel that I was  experienced in this work.

Let me give you some of my background.

I started in my office cleaning business in 1972.  My wife and I had just moved to Western Kentucky and we had one son who was 2 1/2 years old at the time.

I previously had sold office copiers when we lived in Pennsylvania.  it just wasn’t working out doing that in Kentucky farmland where we lived.

My wife’s cousin had  also moved to the area from California and he did office cleaning.  He said, “Since you are a salesman and I know cleaning why don’t we start a cleaning business together.”  So that was the start for me with office cleaning.

As you know, when you start any business you can’t be Rich Overnight.  It takes time and sometimes years to get the business to a point where it can be a fulltime income for one family let alone two!

So we printed some flyers and business cards and went to work making contacts and giving estimates.  When you start any business sometimes you have to take what you can get at the time.  What do I mean by that?

Within a month we were able to start a few cleaning contracts.  A few of them we cleaned one or two days a week.  Also, we started a few cleaning accounts that we cleaned just once a month.

Remember, I just said that you have to take what you could get at the time.  Now, this was Kentucky farmland.  We started to clean a Grain Factory twice a week.  The farmers would bring the grain and it would be weighed on huge scales.  Actually, before we would mop the floors, we had to shovel grain off the office floors first.  There was probably a 55 gallon bag of grain that we had to pick up every time the office was cleaned.  Needless to say, it wasn’t the nicest or easiest cleaning account.

Here is another one that we started with.  We had a Stockyards where we cleaned the offices.  They would bring sick baby calves into the offices which would add to the mess on the floors.  Good thing there wasn’t carpet in the building.  So, part of our responsibility was first to clean up the mess and then mop and clean the floors.  This was a very interesting cleaning account!

I have always said, “You can really clean up in this type of work!”

Well, this was a start to our Office Clean Business.  We lived in Kentucky for six years.  In those six years we developed a cleaning service which covered parts of three counties.

From that early start which wasn’t very glamorous we signed contracts with a number of banks and cleaned them five days a week.  We did work for doctors offices, a newspaper company, Electric Company, Farmers Credit Union,  a few department stores, Automobile Dealerships, Borough Buildings and a number of Manufacturing Companies.

We even stripped and waxed the floors of a few Grocery Stores and buffed them on a weekly basis.  We also contracted the cleaning of a small Convenience Store Chain which had between 30 and 40 locations.  They had to be cleaned monthly, so we did probably 2 or 3 of them every week.

As you can see, our office cleaning business became very sizable, to the point that it required  hiring some workers to help do the work.

In addition, we also did the window cleaning in just about every account that we contracted.  Carpet Cleaning was also done for a extra charge.  We did residential carpet cleaning also.

In 1977, my wife and I decided that we had to move back to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania because of family responsibilities.  Now, we had three children that we had to raise.  I sold my portion of the business to my wife’s cousin when we moved.

From 1977 until 2014 we established a pretty nice family business and we had a number of people that we sub-contracted work to.  This time I was very experienced in all areas of office cleaning, window cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors and we even started to do residential cleaning in the form of a mini-maid service.

About 5 years ago I had to have my second knee replacement.  Everything is fine but, there is nothing like your original parts.  I wasn’t able to get down on my knees like I use to when I was younger to strip floors and do intense cleaning.  So, in 2014 I decided to retire from my Office Cleaning Business after 42 years!  Now I have more time to golf.
